The Story of the 2x4 Landscape

These small oil landscapes, painted directly onto 4" lengths of Northwest cedar 2x4 stock, came into being in 2013 as a way of reaching a wide audience through affordable, easily acquired art objects. I say objects because, while they may certainly be hung on the wall, they are perhaps more apt to be placed on a shelf or a mantel, or even held in one's hand. First offered on the online marketplace Etsy, 2x4 Landscapes soon caught the attention of local galleries and retailers who saw in them not only faithful representations of the region's scenic areas, but as pieces of art equally at home in the shop or on the wall. They have undergone many changes over the last few years - not least of which, the offering of a larger, 5-1/2" square, 2x6 Landscape - always with an eye to greater simplicity and versatility. At the time of publication of this post, 332 2x4 Landscapes had been painted. The story continues.

See how they complement modern decor!

An early example - at one point I even included a nail.

Goodbye labels, hello brand.
